SPC SCOTT PETERSON
THE DECISION TO SERVE
S

cott Peterson is a highly motivated young man who knows what he wants to do. His mother, Lisa, will tell you, "As a child he had a very strong will, and he was very determined." So when he told her of his interest in joining the Army Reserve, she wasn't entirely surprised. She did, however, want to know more about what it meant to be in the Army Reserve, what his commitment would be and how long he would serve.

Lisa and Scott researched online together to get many of the answers they needed. Scott visited the unit he'd be training with locally. To help them learn even more, two Recruiters came to their home. They took the time to explain to Scott and his mom what Scott could expect in the Army Reserve, as well as the financial benefits the Army Reserve offered. Scott was impressed. "Their options seemed to best fit what I wanted to do with my life. Because I wanted to become an Officer, I wanted to go to college, I wanted the freedom to move around."

Lisa felt good about the Army Reserve, too. "After everything we've been through, I knew it was a good decision." And while she has always been confident in Scott, nothing prepared her for the first time she saw Scott in his uniform. "I had never seen him look so handsome and so strong. I just couldn't be a prouder mom that day."

Scott: My name is Scott Peterson. I am a Specialist with the United States Army Reserve.

Lisa: Hi, my name is Lisa Hicks, and we are here to talk about my son Scott. What I found to be very true about Scott as a child, he had a very strong will, and he was very determined. I feel Scott made the commitment to join the Army Reserve because of the type of person he is. I think when you're making such a major decision in life, it has to come from within the heart.

Scott: I chose the Army Reserve because their options seem best fit to what I want to do with my life. Because I want to become an Officer, I wanted to go to college, I wanted the freedom to move around. They really allow you to do a lot in the Reserve, there's a lot of opportunity.

Lisa: Scott, he had many choices, and we went over them all, but the main thing is to gather as much information as you can.

Scott: I visited the unit that I was looking at joining. I talked with my mother. We looked at stuff online, a lot of brochures the Recruiters had given us. They told me I was eligible for Federal Tuition Assistance, which pays for my tuition, and the GI Bill, once I completed my initial entry training, which is Basic and AIT. What my mother thought, and her feelings on me joining, I couldn't help but not take that into consideration.

Lisa: After everything we've been through, you know, I knew it was a good decision.

Scott: She saw me in my uniform, and she was all happy. And she, you know, came up and gave me a big hug and told me how cute I was in my uniform. It was nice.

Lisa: I was just so proud of him. I had never seen him look so handsome and so strong. I just couldn't be a prouder mom that day.
